From AOLco.uk: A ‘Claire’s Law’ campaign is to be launched tomorrow and, if successful, it could enable women who date men they meet online to find out from police if their boyfriends have a history of violence. The Mail on Sunday reports that Home Secretary Theresa May is considering introducing Claire’s Law, which is named after 36-year-old mother Clare Wood, who was killed by a man she met on Facebook. After her death, friends and family were shocked to discover that the killer had a history of violence against women, including repeated harassments, threats and the kidnapping at knifepoint of one of this ex-girlfriends. The proposed law is modelled on Sarah’s Law, named after murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne, which gives parents the legal right to know if anyone with regular access to children poses a risk. Campaigners believe that Claire’s Law is needed because of the growth of internet dating. It is now much more common for women to start relationships with men who they know little about. However critics believe that the plan could jeopardise civil liberties.
