Safe Online Dating…Background Check for Java Date?

In California, a 19-year-old college student went missing in June after she meeting a convicted sex offender on Craigslist. In Philadelphia, a man was accused of raping seven women, six of whom he met on Match.com. He was convicted this summer of two counts of sexual assault but acquitted of other rapes. Dating sites, and other social networking sites are fast forming their own virtual dark alleyways where a new criminals are hiding and operating quite anonymously. 

Reports of people being lured by personal ads whether on paid dating sites or free classified ads are increasing daily. At one time, personal computers were expensive and small percentage of the population was computer literate. Computers are now inexpensive, and mainstreamed with children growing up using them and the Internet has become a venue for crime-anonymous crime.

 Online love predators are finding that dating sites venues are great places to hide behind dating profiles. But do you do a background check for a Java date? With over 50% of dating profiles being false, many dating and relationship coaches are advocating just that. 

But how realistic and practical is that? And just when do you run the background check…before the first date (seems a little much); or after you are already emotionally attached?

Consider the new concept of Dating ID. Dating ID is non invasive and voluntary.  Although an ID check won’t prove their character or criminal background, it’s an important first step for safe online dating. Once you get to know them and want to take the relationship to a serious level, a background check prior to marriage may be in order; but at least at that time you will know you are running a background check on a real person.
