Question by Jack: I have to fill out a background check for the University I am applying too?
I am transferring to this University and have to fill out a background check because I was charged and convicted of a crime in my past. It is asking me for the case number and all I have is the the file number. Is that the same thing? It also asks for the charge date, is that the date the offense took place or when I was in court for the charge?

If you got fired from a previous job for violation of company policy and leave that job off of your resume will that show up on a pre employment background check for a different job?

It really depends upon how thorough your new employer is. Such information is generally pretty easy to come by — so it doesn’t take a lot to find it.

Also, you might look at the new application for the new employer…there is probably something there about lying on an application being grounds for termination.

If you have been recently charged with a crime but have not been convicted nor have you had a court date set, does anything show up when an employer does a background check?

If there is a charge pending it can show up on a background check as a pending charge.

Is it possible to obtain marriage license copies online? My mom needs one and I told her to just go online to get it but she says that it is totally not possible and that marriage licenses are not public record, but I disagree. Why wouldn’t they be public record? Anyway, who is right, me or mom?

you are. marriage AND divorce records are public record, along with birth and death records. ANYONE with the money and an ID can get them.

A few jobs that looked promising suddenly told me they didnt want me. I keep thinking that its because of something I did when I was 18 (got caught trying to steal a video game from Target.. was not arrested or anything though, just charged by security). Does that sort of thing go on my background check? How can I view the info that comes up on my background check?

a background check uses your name, aliases, address, former addresses, birth-date, social security number and divers license/state ID number to look for PUBLIC records that relate to you. criminal records, judgments, licenses and certifications, settlements from workers comp claims etcetera. if there is no public record then the information will not be seen. did these prospective employers do a background check? did you fill out the release to have the checks performed?
if a background check was done they must provide you a copy if you request it or if it is used to make a negative employment decision.

these reports are a “consumer report” and are covered by the
Fair Credit Reporting Act

your past problem has absolutely nothing to do with why you have not found a job

I met a gril who works for the local 911 center and before a date she ran a background check on me using the north carolina police departments system for personal use. Though I have nothing on my record or anything to hide other than a speeding ticket. She told me she had access to my social security number, even told me things I sold to a pawnshop before i didnt need anymore, she told me every gun permit I have and all of this very personal information about me, I printed everything off she wrote to me in facebook, I feel very uncompfortable about her doing this is this illegal?

If a company has a policy of a 7 year background check, then is it from the time of conviction or time done with probation?

If the policy is 7 years, then it’s 7 years. ANYTHING on your record within that time will show.

My friend got a failure to appear and has not yet rectified it because he is trying to get the money for a lawyer. He needed a job and it seems that every place he applied looked promising til the background check. Would that be because of the failure to appear?

A “Failure To Appear” is a warrant for his arrest, and therefore would appear in most background checks.

Your friend’s prospective employers don’t know the story behind the warrant, just that he it appears he doesn’t take care of his legal issues.

Screw waiting to save money for a lawyer. Keep it for his bond and take care of the warrant now. Have him turn up at the jurisdiction where the warrant was issued, bond him out with a new court date. Depending on the jurisdiction might take a little while, but will be better than getting arrested on the warrant. Make sure he goes to court when scheduled.

Its real easy to get caught in a sprial of warrants, arrests etc, especially if he’s driving on a suspended license (based on your other question), where the charges and fines just keep adding up.

Is there a free public site to look up people in Pennsylvania to see crimes they committed? Bad checks, dui’s or things like that. Not a background check that I have to pay for.

The PA Unified Judicial System website is about as close as you’re going to get. It’s not as comprehensive as a background check that you pay for, but if they’ve gone to court for a criminal charge it will be here. You have to know the county (usually) and the older records from before 1980 are not always 100% up to date, but hey, it’s free!

Question by kari: What is a DUI first offenders program, and how can I determine if my state offers this?
I live in Hawaii, and a close friend was convicted for DUI. I read online that some states have a program where after a certain period of good behavior a person’s record can be cleared, and I would like to pass this information on if possible.

have him ask his lawyer/public defender. While some states have it, they might call it something different.
