Google Tech Talk September 17, 2009 ABSTRACT Aleecia M. McDonald will speak about industry self-regulation for online privacy. After a brief overview of how we got here, we will explore the status quo through two studies. First, what is the user burden if people read online privacy policies? How long would it take to do so, and what is the economic value of that time? Second, how well can users understand privacy policies? We evaluated six privacy policies in three different presentation formats and found standardized formats do not help users as much as their proponents might like. Finally, we conclude with an overview of public policy options for online privacy. Bring your ideas, we could have a lively discussion. Aleecia M. McDonald is a PhD candidate in Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is a member of the Cylab Usable Privacy and Security (CUPS) research laboratory. Her interests span the intersection of Internet technology, policy, economics, and law. Ms. McDonald’s research includes the efficacy of industry self regulation, behavioral economics and mental models of privacy, network traffic analysis to combat spyware, automotive privacy, and RFID technology. Safety in your Florida Online Dating Instances

Florida online dating will never be the same again. This is after the current steps being taken towards legislating forms of online dating safety into law. It is in a way poised at protecting customers who frequent the online dating sites. A current but pending legislation require sites to disclose the kind of security features they offer to give their customers.  The state is following the lead by New Jersey, which has become the first state to pass the legislation in the protection of its online daters in January. Florida is hoping to pass a bill entitled ‘the Internet Predator Awareness and Online Safety Act, HB 411.’ The bill will require all Florida Online dating sites to disclose their current and prospective customers, and it does not matter whether they provide security checks for their customers or not.

The bill to provide safety to Florida online dating individuals goes a bit further to requiring the dating sites to disclose the kinds of security and background checks they carry out. The minimum that is hoped is to include within the background checks for searches pertaining to felonies, sexual offences and convictions general misdemeanor.  Incase the dating site hardly provides background checks for the online members, the state will then require it to communicate to members and interested parties conspicuously and clearly, that they do not provide any criminal background checks. The bill is aimed at protecting the senior women, whether divorced or widowed, who might appear vulnerable to the fraud prevalent around the internet.

Many Florida online dating seniors tend to be the obvious targets for most unscrupulous people. They also seem desperate for any companionship, after they had enjoyed years of marital harmony and bliss.  Their healthier saving accounts are what make them attractive to the many fraudsters. The swindles are not anything new, although there has been a steady rise in the occurrences within the same time online dating has become so popular. These crimes are focusing on the desperate singles that are alone and always willing to go to any distance to find the right special person.

On the other hand, many victims of online scammers usually do not report any case affecting them. The victim might be very embarrassed to contact authorities or report an incident affecting them. For those who are against this Florida online dating legislation, they think the safety measures might lull the dating sites in to believing in some form of false security.  As you make use of online dating services, it is very important to protect yourself and any information you might have.  Use your common sense prior to making any decision that might jeopardize your online dating instances.
